'Winning' Powerball ticket was bought day after draw

Stanley Philander, the alleged winner of the R91-million Powerball Lotto, bought his ticket on Saturday, the day after the draw.

Prof Bongani Khumalo, chairman of lottery management company Gidani, on Tuesday morning told a media conference in Midrand that "Philander's winning ticket was actually bought on Saturday ... the day following the powerball draw on (Friday night)."

It had initially reported that Philander, a Cape Town hardware store cleaner, had won the draw. Khumalo said Philander had not tried to claim the prize, but his "win" was picked up by media. Philander and his wife are deaf mutes.

Khumalo did confirm that the jackpot had indeed been won by a 43-year-old woman from the Western Cape.

She is married with two teenagers but does not want her identity revealed.
